We've eaten there twice, the first time the food was very uneven in quality, the second time everything was pretty bad. It reeked of old fish (fresh fish should not have a fishy smell). The food was worse than average, very poor quality. We did not have any of the sushi, so I can't comment on that, save the bad fish smell. I've walked by many times since then, and the fish smell is still there, sometimes reaching the Border's entryway. I don't personally eat sushi, but the people I went with do eat it, and they wouldn't touch it given the smell. There are far better restaurants in the Galleria.
Kona Grill is a regular after work stop for me and my friends. The atmosphere is nice, the food is great and the drinks are even better. We all travel often but always meet at Kona to catch up. Ask for Jake, super bartender and individual, always has a smile for you after a long day at the office. Quite refreshing!!
(FOOD POISONING)
I visited The Kona Grill in the Galleria around 9:15pm on June 28th. I ordered Sushi it was called the The California Roll. The next morning around 7am I developed unusual stomach pains and uncomfortable cramps. Then and hour later I had diarrhea through out the morning and then around noon I was vomiting up blood and small white rice pellets, exactly what was in the sushi.
I started getting weak and I tried to eat and drink liquids nothing stayed down in my system, I vomited everything back up. I was becoming more and more dehydrated so I turned myself over to the LBJ Hospital. I barely fainted at the admission counter. Later that night the Doctors had me on fluids and did blood and stool, tests and diagnosed me with some type of stomach virus I caught from eating The sushi.
On July 1st I called up the Resturant and all the manager did was defend his establishment.
sorry to hear about your experience, however, a California roll is made of rice, imitation crab meat, avocado and cucumber. There is nothing raw or likely to cause food poisoning in it. I'm thinking you probably ate or drank something else or you caught a stomach virus and Kona Grill just happened to be the last place you ate at. I've been to Kona Grill, and all the food is fresh and made from quality ingredients.
Actually, although you are correct as to the ingredients of the roll, it is highly likely that the rice could have come in contact with the raw seafood, in preparation of other sushi or sashimi. Rice is much more likely to contain and/or harbor foodbourne bacteria than most people think. Also, the imitation crabmeat, avocado and cucumber, when not handled correctly, are just as susceptible to bacterial growth as any other food. The symptoms this person has described are rarely found in common viruses. However, they are common in foodbourne illnesses, especially those contracted from mishandled fish.
Yes i know........the same happened to me....but fortunately it wasn't that serious........................................................the manger did the same...what a retard
WOW! I LOVE KONA, IT'S AN EXCITING ENVIRONMENT TO BE AROUND. I LOVE THE FACT THAT ITS NEAR A BUSY INTERSECTIONM BECAUSE THERE ARE ALOT OF PEOPLE AND THINGS TO SEE. THE SERVICE IS A LITTLE SLOW BECAUSE OF THE HIGH OCCUPANCY, BUT IT'S MUCH WORTH THE WAIT. MY FAVORITE PART IS THE HAPPY HOUR, THEY HAVE THE BEST DRINKS IN TOWN!
I really enjoyed my dining experience at the Kona Grill. The atmosphere is very warm and relaxing. I had the Macadamia Nut Chicken and it was delicious. It comes with white cheddar mashed potatoes and this amazing sauce that I couldn't get enough of. The veggies that come with it are crisp and flavorful. For dessert you must try the macadamia nut pie. If you like pecan pie this is even better than that!! The meatloaf is also really good and it wasn't dry at all. Luckily I didn't have the bad servers that some of these other people experienced. I will definitely be going back for more!
The first time I ate at Kona Grill, my expectations were high because of it's location, it's usual business, and mostly the above average price tag. I ordered a bowl of pasta which sounded great, but it was literally a bowl filled with oil. I actually thought the cook wanted to quit and my food was his final disgruntled goodbye. I poured oil out of the bowl and onto my plate, filling the base of the plate, and there was still too much oil in my bowl to enjoy the meat (plus everything tasted like extra virgin anyway). The server offered to replace my meal, but didn't seam very simpathetic...as if I was wrong. Trust me, no italian dish in the world is supposed to come with that much oil!
