Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens



In 1949, Thelma and Charles Mercer created their garden paradise along Cypress Creek and on this land preserved beautiful specimens of dogwood, rusty black-haw viburnum, hawthorn and other native East Texas trees. In 1974, Harris County purchased and preserved the 15.5-acre private garden as an education and horticulture facility for the public. Today, Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens encompasses over 260 acres and attracts over 100,000 visitors annually. This nationally recognized arboretum and botanic garden displays the Gulf Coast Region's largest collection of native and cultivated plants and is a participating institution for the national Center for Plant Conservation. This internship will focus on enhancing work at the site to preserve and cultivate important and endangered native plant species and assist the botanist with other duties.



Duties: Confer with botanist and other administrative, technical and maintenance staff members and skilled volunteers to plan activities for maintenance of plants for display in Endangered Species/Wildscapes Garden, Mercer's conservation nurseries, installation in special exhibits or use in research projects, 20%; utilize knowledge and abilities in identifying pests, pathogens and invasive species located in aforementioned garden areas and those that impact the botanical collections, 20%; assist botanist with field collections of conservation plants, monitor existing wild populations of conservation plants and document the biology of conservation plants at Mercer and within existing wild populations, 20%; assist botanist with maintaining and stocking seed banks for conservation plants, 20%; assist botanist with record keeping, database entry, herbarium maintenance, preparation of educational materials, and preparation of garden signage, 20%. Percentages of the aforementioned tasks will vary seasonally.



Benefits: $200.00/weekly stipend, Americorps Education Award that can go toward tuition or student loans, and travel stipend.
